Puma Sashimi by Jeremiah Maddock
Electric Works is pleased to present a three-person show featuring new work by Harry Clewans, Jeremiah Maddock, and Dave Schubert.
Harry Clewans’ unique woodblock prints are composed of images of single things found at random: a plant root, sole of a shoe, a piece of kelp, an old broom. Woodcuts of these images combine so that the
completed composition both transcends and contains its resident images. These large-scale collages come out of his study of antique medical and
scientific illustrations, as well as the prints of Albrecht Dürer and the
tradition of collage and assemblage as practiced by Max Ernst, Jess, Bruce Connor, and others. Clewans lives and works in Oakland.
Jeremiah Maddock will present several new works on paper, board and book covers in a large wall installation that will comprise over one hundred works. Known for his meticulously rendered and minutely detailed drawings, the self-taught Maddock will be presenting a new series of portraits and patterned pieces. His drawings, which balance between channeled shamanic totems and tribal abstraction, seem to defy easy categorization. What they are is electric and seem to vibrate on the found surfaces on which he draws and paints. Maddock currently resides in New York.
Dave Schubert, perhaps best known for his photographs of urban life is making his gallery debut with a showing of new work. He seems to have a sixth sense about him: he is always there at the scene of the crime (be it a street brawl, a late night bender, or any number of situations seemingly difficult to capture). Documentary photographs without a specific narrative or agenda comprise Schubert's work, who has been a tireless historian of both San Francisco and New York graffiti, music and contemporary art scenes. Schubert lives and works in San Francisco.
A reception for the artists takes place Friday, March 5 at Electric Works, 130 8th Street in San Francisco that is free and open to the public.
