Smiths: Arts & Skills Service: On Shell-shock, or Ammunition and Ornament

4/29/2010 7:00pm at SFMOMA

Speakers to be announced
Koret Visitor Education Center

Highlighting the historical relationship of art-making and the war effort both at home and on the battlefield, this iteration of Arts & Skills Service considers trench art of World War I, made from the debris of warfare, most often by soldiers. On Thursday night, we take up the work of leading trench art scholars like Jane Kimball, whose Trench Art: An Illustrated History highlights the often-overlooked history of exquisite objects made from shrapnel, shell casings, and battlefield debris. Follow the discussion with a SMITHS class on Friday at SFMOMA and additional making activities at the SMITHS storefront in Oakland on Saturday.
