Continuing the long tradition of presenting solo exhibitions and projects, Southern Exposure presents these four artists’ work as part of its ongoing 35th anniversary year and inaugural season in its new space at 3030 20th Street in San Francisco’s Mission District.

Lacey Jane Roberts, Building it Up to Tear it Down, 2010
New York based artist Lacey Jane Roberts makes fences. Curious about the ubiquitous nature of industrial fencing in most urban environments and fascinated by their construction- the weave of the cyclone fence mimics the loop of the knitted stitch- Roberts’ work explores the ideas around enforced boundaries and in particular the roles assumed by the people on either side of the boundary. In Building it Up to Tear it Down, Roberts presents a large scale, hand-woven, colorful razor wire and cyclone crank-knitted fence through which she seeks to reclaim and re-imagine the industrial fence and the use of craft through her work.

The gallery exhibition will open on Friday, January 8, 2010 from 7 – 9 pm, with artist talks at 6:30 pm by participating artists, Quick, Roberts & Vogt. The exhibition will be on view January 8, 2010 – February 20, 2010. Gallery hours are 12 - 6 pm, Tuesday - Saturday.
